Thahiti Chowk stands as a serene enclave of history, culture, and spirituality. This quaint square, often overlooked by the hurried traveller, holds a treasure trove of stories and traditions that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of the Kathmandu Valley. Thahiti Chowk, also known as Tahiti Tole, is located in the heart of Kathmandu, near the famous Asan Bazaar.

Thahiti Chowk dates back to the 15th-century stupa located at its centre. The "Thahiti Stupa" is said to have been built by a Tibetan trader who used to live there. There was a hiti (natural water source with a tap built on it) that the trader discovered produced gold coins. Fearing someone would steal the water spout, the trader built this stupa over it to hide the hiti. The ornate doors are usually closed, but when they are open, you can see three very faded stone statues inside. The name "Thahiti" is believed to be derived from the Newari word "Thahiti," meaning "place of stone water spouts." Historically, this area was an important hub for traders and pilgrims travelling through the ancient trade routes that crisscrossed the Kathmandu Valley.

The square is home to several ancient structures, the most notable being the Shree Nateshwar Mahadev Temple, which dates back to the Malla period. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, showcases exquisite Newari architecture with its intricately carved wooden windows and doors. The stone water spouts, or "dhunge dharas," are a testament to the advanced water management systems of the time, providing a vital source of water for the community.
